Danny Sullivan: geen March 2024 spam update

Afgelopen dinsdag (5 maart) kondigde Google de March 2024 core update aan, met daarbij ook nieuwe (anti-)spamregels. En dus wordt er door vakgenoten gerept over een ‘March 2024 spam update’. Van een spam update is alleen geen sprake, aldus Danny Sulivan van Google.

Hoezo March 2024 spam update?

Naar aanleiding van de aankondiging van de March 2024 core update verschenen berichten over een spam update. Zo rept Barry Schwartz over ‘March 2024 spam update’ in zijn artikel op Search Engine Land, en maar van een spam update als in een algoritme-update (b)lijkt geen sprake. Danny Sullivan reageert als reactie op een tweet van Barry Schwartz met “New spam policies aren’t an algorithmic update. So those aren’t “updates” that “overlap” with the core and spam updates.”

We do generally try to avoid this, but we had both the core update and the spam update ready, and ultimately, we're going to push updates we think will improve the quality of search results. Manual actions aren't an update. New spam policies aren't an algorithmic update. So those…

Misschien heeft Barry toch gelijk

En toch. Misschien heeft Barry Schwartz wel een punt. In Googles Search Central blog wordt namelijk wel gerept over een March 2024 spam update:

Our new spam policies

Our spam policies are designed to address practices that can negatively impact the quality of Google's search results. Today, we're announcing three new spam policies against bad practices we've seen grow in popularity: expired domain abuse, scaled content abuse, and site reputation abuse.

We encourage content creators to review all of our spam policies and ensure they aren't engaging in such practices. Sites that violate our spam policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all. If affected by a spam manual action, site owners will receive a notice through their registered Search Console account and can apply to have the action reconsidered.

Along with our new spam policies, we are also launching the March 2024 spam update today.
